A porch with a rocker
or two is a friendly and welcoming place. But
more than that, a rocking chair invites us to
slow down, relax and enjoy life. Rocking soothes
the soul, comforts aching bones and sets our
thoughts adrift.
To the Amish, furniture making is a practical
art, admired for its beauty, but lived in for
generations. This style of 'bent frame'
rocker goes back into Amish History well over 100
years. The contoured, form fitting seat makes it
especially comfortable. When you sit in one of these, you
won't want to get up again! The frame is of
choice hickory saplings and the back and seat are
of light oak. The twig part is young shagbark
hickory saplings that are cut in the winter &
early spring while the sap is down so the bark
will stay fast with age. After being partially
dried they are cut to length and steamed. They
are then put into forms and shaped. They are in
the forms for about a day, then assembled by
clamping in a jig and pieces added until they are
completed. After sanding, several coats of very
durable varnish are applied and they require very
little care. The rocker is exceptionally
comfortable. One has to sit in it to fully
appreciate it. It is made by a local Amish
craftsman whose full-time occupation is crafting
these chairs. Each rocker is signed and dated by
the Amish craftsman!
